GATE School Opportunities

The Fort Atkinson Gifted & Talented Program offers many opportunities throughout the year. Browse through these and find one (or more!) that your child might enjoy!


If your child likes WRITING:

Southern Lakes Anthology Writing Contest

Who? Grades 3 through 8
What? Students compete in different areas of writing including poetry, short story, illustrated writing and personal narrative. Entries are judged both on the local level and then at a regional contest. Prizes include publication.
When? Information is distributed in classrooms in the fall. Entries are due in November or December.

Future Problem Solving

Who? Grades 4 through 12
What? As a team students write creative solutions to a problem. Teams compete with other schools.
When? FPS starts in October. The first qualifying problem is due at the end of that month. FPS usually meets during the school day.


If your child likes ART:

Arts Immersion Day

Who? Grades 7 and 8
What? Travel to UW Whitewater to learn more about performing, visual and musical art. Participate in group sessions, in art and music, with students from throughout the region.
When? Students are invited to apply in December or January. The event takes place in the spring.

Southern Lakes Anthology Contest

Who? Grades 3 through 8
What? Students can create a black and white drawing, a cartoon, or illustrate a piece of writing in response to this year’s prompt.
When? Information is distributed in classrooms in the fall. Entries are due in November.


If your child likes Enrichment:

Extended Learning Classes & Sat. Classes

Who? Grades 3,4, & 5
What? Extended Learning Classes are opportunities for students to explore subjects of interest through a presentation by a community volunteer.
When? January - April, at each elementary school.

Young Scholars & Sat. Enrichment Programs

Who? Grades 2-6 & 5-8
What? Young Scholars Program through UW-Whitewater and Saturday Enrichment Program through UW-Madison.
When? January and February


If your child likes to LEAD:

Middle School Leadership Conference

Who? Grades 7 and 8
What? Travel to UW Whitewater to meet with students from around Wisconsin to learn more about being an effective, positive leader. The day is topped off with a performance from illusionist Ardan James!
When? Applications are available in September in FAMS Pupil Services Office. The event takes place in October.


If your child likes to IMAGINE:

Destination Imagination

Who? Grades 3 through 12 (Primary teams may also compete using a slightly different format)
What? As a team, students work through a scenario. They build sets, act out skits and solve problems.
When? Groups form in SEptember and meet outside of school. Final competition is in March.


If your child likes to SERVE OTHERS:

Mini Grant Program

Who? Grades 3 through 12
What? Receive $50 to help you plan, organize and carry out a good deed in the community. Funds are donated by Daily Union/WD Hoard Company, Optimist Club, Blackhawk Chapter of Vietnam Veterans and the Fort Atkinson Garden Club.
When? Applications are available in each building in spring. Mini Grant projects must be completed by the end of May.
