Chance -
2004 Orchestra Dessert Concert Guest Chance is comprised of Ed Willett
(cellist/singer/songwriter) and Cheryl Leah (vocalist/songwriter). For the last
sixteen years, they have devoted themselves to exploring the wedding between two
icons of power and passion, the cello and the human voice. Theirs is a hybrid
musical form that springs from classical chamber music, folk, and jazz. They
find themselves a part of the emerging genre known as World Chamber Music. Their
style is dramatic, thought-provoking, and often amusing. There is strong melodic
and poetic content throughout the compositions, and they perform them with a
great lightness of spirit. Chance is in it for the art. Over the past sixteen years, their multi-influenced music has intrigued wildly diverse audiences. First heard nationally on the hit t.v. show "Northern Exposure", they maintain a full and far reaching schedule of concertizing throughout much of the country. Their touring has included performances in numerous universities as well as a wide array of arts oriented venues. A few of these include the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, the Philbrook Museum of Art’s theater in Tulsa, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the World Music Stage at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas. Individual members of Chance have recorded and performed with jazz greats Miroslav Vitous, Herbie Hancock, film composers Lalo Schifrin and John Williams, Herb Alpert, Robert Goulet, Michael Columbier and many others. Chance has enjoyed considerable airplay in the United States on college stations, National Public Radio, and television, and has been aired internationally in over 30 countries. Currently, Chance is a regular feature at the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, an annual 3-month concert season in Bayfield, Wisconsin. They are frequently heard on "Tent Show Radio", the WPR show compiled from live performances at the Chautauqua. They toured as part of Big Top founder Warren Nelson’s new musical "30th Star", a work commissioned by the state of Wisconsin for its Sesquicentennial celebration of statehood. Recent credits include the premiere of their new work for chamber ensemble and choir ("Fields: A Cantata for the Peaceful Rain") with world renowned new music ensemble Present Music from Milwaukee. A movement from this work was recorded by celtic harpist Kim Robertson with guests "Solas" on her new CD ("The Spiral Gate") on the Narada label. Over the last two summer seasons at the Chautauqua, Chance opened for the legendary Little Feat. Also, as part of the house band for Big Top Chautauqua, they opened for Willie Nelson and the Smothers Brothers. Also, they continue their annual work as a cultural partner of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education (ACE) Program, and has done numerous residencies throughout the country. INDIVIDUAL BIOGRAPHIES Cheryl Leah is a vocalist, composer, and a published poet and lyricist. Known in the music world for her staunch adherence to the pursuit of originality, she has gained the respect of a stunningly wide array of prominent musicians. From the praises of songwriting legend Jackson Browne to those of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Roy Tanabe, the theme remains the same - her voice is one of a kind. Ms. Leah is a graduate of the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, founded by jazz great and original music theorician Dick Grove. She is also an instrumentalist, playing Baroque Alto Recorder. Ms. Leah is the founder and Artistic Director of the Amaranth Concert Series, now in its fourth season. Ed Willett
earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California
School of Music in Los Angeles, California. He is a cellist, guitarist,
composer, arranger, and vocalist. During his education at U.S.C., he studied
with cellist Eleanor Schoenfeld. While in Los Angeles, he was chosen to
participate in the world renowned Piatigorsky master class for cellists. There
he studied with Zara Nelsova, Joel Krosnick and Erling Bengston. He has been a
member of many symphony orchestras, including the Honolulu Symphony, the
Pasadena Symphony, the Glendale Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Mozart
Orchestra, and as co-principal of the U.S.C. Symphony, conducted by Daniel
Lewis. He toured for several years for Columbia Artists Management with the
Clarion Trio as part of their Community Concert Series. In 1999 he premiered his
cello concerto, commissioned by the Chequamegon Bay Area Symphony. Mr. Willett
performed with the 87-performance tour "Spirit", the nationally touring Native
American/rock ballet written by film composer Peter Buffet. This summer, with
the house band for the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, he performed with
Howard Levy (formerly of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones). CHANCE REVIEW The discovery of a new sound in music involves a dynamic process which can’t be calculated, manufactured or even understood. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, critics and colleagues sit up and take notice. "In any of these myriad combinations, their playing was
always polished and passionate. By the end of this musical treat, every audience
member had learned one thing - taking this CHANCE was no gamble!" "There’s nothing haphazard in the
hot songs and vocals of the band CHANCE. They deliberately and consistently
capture a wide audience from teenagers to grandmas with their humorous,
imaginative songs, upbeat melodies and unusual instrumentation… CHANCE strikes a
universal chord with people partly because they sing about dramatic, often
humorous images." "Zeros in on your emotions and is supported by wonderfully
unique instrumentation, under the spell of these fine performers is fresh, alive
and moving." Grammy Award winning artists’ "You have a beautiful voice Cheryl" "It’s the most creative project I’ve heard in a long time"
"You keep unveiling new wonderful surprises as your
performance goes on" "Fantastic set" Residencies: "Finding the Groove, Finding the Style" Intermediate/Advanced A music performance class for instrumentalists and vocalists. This class for high school band, choir, or orchestra, addresses the challenges inherent in interpreting jazz, blues and popular musical styles. Students learn through Chance’s original etudes to: A) identify crucial characteristics of these styles , B) internalize them, and C) apply them to their instrument or voice. As music educators are very aware, there is often a great gap between what is represented in the arrangements of non-classical styles and what the composers likely intended. This class explores the unwritten areas of groove and musical style and offers some tools to help students more thoroughly enjoy their excursions into these arenas. In 2004 this class will be presented by "Chance" at the American String Teachers Association’s national convention in Dallas Texas. "Through the Eyes of Invention" - music composition - all ages Created at the request of the Milwaukee Symphony and their "ACE Cultural Partners Program", this educational performance explores the fascinating process of musical invention and composition. Using their own inventions as models, Chance entices students to take a look at music through their eyes, and by doing so, gives them an example of where new ideas can come from. The program, though created for grades 4-6, can be easily adapted for any age. While relying on Chance’s performance, it contains many opportunities for class involvement and participation.
