String Festival
- Thursday, June 3, 2004
http://www.fortschools.org/hswebs/OrchestraBoosters/StringFestival.htm

All students will participate in our annual String Festival on Thursday evening, June 3 . It's a very exciting, motivating event for our younger students as they work to pass their levels and have a chance to perform with the high school and middle school orchestras. Included in the concert will be several guest musicians.

Levels are a tradition here in Fort Atkinson. There are ten short pieces of music, each one presenting a different skill to be mastered. Sometimes it is a bowing technique, sometimes it is about style of playing, it may include fingering techniques.

In order for a level to be passed, the student must master the technique for the level, and memorize the piece of music. Level One is the most basic level, with each succeeding level presenting a higher challenge until they reach the top piece, Level Ten.

At the String Festival, starting with Level Ten, each level will be played. Students will join in playing as they reach the highest level they have completed, ending with everyone playing on Level One.

Special guests who will play with the string students will be James Athas, piano, Kit Ehrhardt, voice, and Will Ehrhardt, trumpet

The String Festival concert will also feature combined orchestra pieces where the younger students will join with the older ones for certain pieces concluding with a grade 4 - 12 finale of the "William Tell Overture" .

Summer Music Classes

Even though summer vacation is approaching, it is not the time to put the instrument away until Fall. Instead, your child has some wonderful opportunities to continue building his or her performance skills through summer classes and camps.
Ms. Nielsen will be teaching summer orchestra lessons through the Fort Atkinson Summer School program. Small groups will meet on Wednesdays for 40-minute classes throughout the four-week summer school schedule. The classes will be in small groups of students at similar levels and will be scheduled based on availability.
These classes provide for more individual attention than during the school year and are a great way to build up skills for more difficult pieces.
Enclosed is an application for Summer School. A fee of $10.00 covers all classes taken.
