Another dessert concert is finished and I’m happy to report that we raised over $1,000 for the Orchestra Boosters! One of the ways we will use this money is for music camp scholarships. If your child ever considers a music camp, make sure they apply for a scholarship. It’s too late for you to apply this year but keep it mind for next summer. We also use some of the money to offset the cost of field trips. Field trip money is one of the first cuts when budgets are tight and as you have probably heard, things are tight around here! Thanks to all the volunteers and to these businesses for their donations and support: Mary Preston and McIntyre Floral, Saunders Graphics, Humphrey Floral and Gifts, Sentry Foods, and especially to the Fort Atkinson Garden Club. The day of the Dessert Concert is amazing to me because a few of us arrive at the high school at about 8:00 a.m.; the High School commons looks exactly like that—common. By the time Mary Preston, the decorating committee, and the Garden Club are finished it looks beautiful! So how about those guest artists? Chance was terrific! I was downtown the other day and just happened to overhear two people talking about the dessert concert and how much they liked the guest artist this year. It is obvious you all enjoyed them very much because we sold all 30 CD’s they brought. When I asked them if they had more CD’s we could sell, they were amazed! Thank you for showing your sincere appreciation in that way. If you still want a CD and didn’t get one, contact me. I’m thinking ahead to next year a little bit and I would love to hear anybody’s thoughts. If you have any constructive criticisms, general comments, or good recipes, I want to hear from you! The best way is to e-mail me at triciarae@charter.net Additional Orchestra Teacher The School Board approved a new .4 Orchestra position beginning this fall. The position has been posted, and a number of applications have been received and are being reviewed. Solo & Ensemble Results Fort Atkinson High School hosted the area Solo/Ensemble competition Saturday, March 10. Developed by the Wisconsin School Music Association, students in grades 6 through 12 from the southern Lakes Conference performed selected pieces for critique and were awarded a first through fifth rating. This is the fourth year Fort has been part of the conference competition; and continues to be the only school with orchestra students participating. The Solo/Ensemble contest gives students extra incentive to practice and to learn solo and /or ensemble pieces. It provides a wonderful performing experience for our young musicians. Many students played solos as well as performed in one or more ensembles. Students performing class A pieces and receiving a starred "1" rating advance onto state competition (see*). Here is how Fort Orchestra fared at the competition. Congratulations to all participants ! Class A
