| Tales from
Florida Orchestra students share their experiences
A special "THANK YOU!" to all who donated at the last minute to
help fund the Orchestra's clinic in Florida. YOU made it possible! Here is
what selected students have to say about the experience.

"I thought the most beneficial part of our clinic in MGM was the
sight-reading exercise, I thought it was most beneficial to our playing
style, quality and initiative. as Mr. Rowe was going through the music
pointing out things to look for and habits to adopt, I noticed that these
were all things we looked for in jazz band when doing our sight-reading
exercises. at jazz band competitions, we actually have to compete in the
sight-reading category, so we practice a lot ahead of time, and I was
impressed to see that the orchestra picked up the same skills." - Adam
Bradshaw, Senior "I had a great experience at
Disney. I loved doing my performance and our clinic. I felt very proud at
our concert because many people came to watch us and not all of them were
from Fort. People were also telling me after the performance how the
orchestra sounded and performed. I also loved doing our clinic. I think it
really made us realize how much time we waste when we could be perfecting
the music. It helped us learn what we need to focus on more and our
priorities. I felt it was a very worthwhile experience and am grateful for
the different people and organizations that helped fund us so we were able
to experience this wonderful opportunity." - Heidi Miller, Freshman

"Florida was full of fun and made us think more about our music when we were
in the recording studio. It was a fun experience. the recording was a time
of sight-reading. we got a folder full of music with no titles. Once we were
instructed to open our folders we would play through a piece once or twice,
then go onto the next. Just playing through a piece made us work hard at
getting the piece right the first time. The best part of the recording was
getting it right and playing it to the movie. we got to play the ending
music of "The Little Mermaid" and we set it to the movie. We also recorded
the "Tarzan" movie song, "Trashing the Camp" with Adam Bradshaw's sound
effects. After recording, we got to see a tape of the movie with our playing
in the background. We got to keep a copy of this tape. Overall, our trip was
great and I will remember it as long as I live!" - Alexis Burrow, Junior
"The Fort Atkinson High School Orchestra
participated in a Disney Clinic. This entailed many useful aspects that
bettered our orchestra. The clinician was a very experienced musician who
played instruments, conducted and wrote music. We started by discussing the
six aspects of rehearsing music. After finding out that intensity of the
rehearsal was key in having a successful practice, we then jumped into our
first piece, playing through it and recording it. We then listened to the
recording. It was far from performance quality. We then played through the
piece again and found that since we knew we were being recorded, we played
with a whole lot more confidence and skill. In the end we made a recording
of "The Little Mermaid" and synchronized it with the movie. We were given a
tape of the short film clip. - Dan Rattray, Senior

Senior Spotlight Joel Bradley
Joel Bradley has been an active member in Orchestra for eight years.
Starting in fourth grade in Minot, North Dakota, Joel was amazed by the high
schoolers who performed at his school.
He and his family
moved to Fort Atkinson the next year and he continued his orchestra
training. He has always had a love for classical music and enjoys being part
of a group that plays a variety of classical, jig and jazzy pieces. dressed
in black, Joel loves to play at concerts, showing parents and other audience
members the progress he and the rest of the orchestra has made.
Joel will be
attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to study agriculture. he
plans to continue playing the viola for personal pleasure. the Orchestra
program has taught him many things and provided him with a lasting
experience he will never forget. |
