The Solo/Ensemble contest gives
students extra incentive to practice and to learn solo and/or ensemble
pieces. It provides a wonderful performing experience for our young
musicians.
Sixth graders may play for critique only. This is a
great experience in preparation for next year when they may play for a
rating.
This year's competition starts at 8 a.m. and should be
completed by 4 p.m. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend
contests events. Participating students will have details regarding
performance times.
Many students are playing solos as well as performing
in one or more ensembles.
All performances are free and open to the public. Plan
to spend |
part of Saturday
supporting our students for all their hard work in preparation for
Saturday's competition.

Volunteers needed for Solo/Ensemble competition
Orchestra Booster parents and friends
are encouraged to help Fort Atkinson School District host the District
Solo/Ensemble competition on March 10.
Door monitors, food sales, and many
other easy volunteer jobs are available. Please contact Craig Engstrom
or Tom cook at 563-7811 as soon as possible if you can help. Or, contact
them via e-mail at engstromc@mail.fortschools.org or cookt@mail.fortschools.org.

Most solos and some ensembles
require piano accompaniment. The total accompanist fee for rehearsals and
performance is $10
Students must have a separate copy of their music to
submit to the judges, known as the "judge's copy." Photocopies are
acceptable for ensembles, but original music must be submitted to the judges
for solos.
All measures must be numbered on the music and if
editions other than those on the contest list are used, the original copy
must be submitted to the judge must contain any changes in bowing or
fingering markings.
Most of the contest music is on file at school and may
be used for judge's copies. If you have any questions, contact Trisha
Nielsen at 563-7811 ext. 1122 or e-mail her at
nielsenp@mail.fortschools.org.

Fort Atkinson School students venture on a variety of music field
trips
|
While high school students involved with band, orchestra and chorus are all
a-buzz over the upcoming field trip to perform at Disney World, several
other field trips are coming up that will help our students get exposure to
musicians and different types of music.
Young People Concert/
Madison Symphony Orchestra
On Tuesday, March 6, eighth grand and high school
music students will head to Madison to hear talented young high school

Riverside Symphony
Performance
Council for the Performing Arts, Jefferson
Students in grades 3 through 5 and all Middle School
students will attend a performance by the Riverside Symphony Orchestra,
which is holding a concert at the Council for the Performing Arts in
Jefferson March 23. This New York City-based symphony has been acclaimed by
the New York Times and will expose children to various symphony pieces.
High School Music Trip to Disney World
Every four years, high school students travel somewhere
in the United States to perform. The band, orchestra and choral groups will
take the stage at various times March 24 through 31 at Disney World in
Orlando, Florida.
Our orchestra will perform at the Epcot Center on
Saturday, March 24. Many orchestra students tapped into funds they raised
selling geraniums in past years to help finance the trip.
Plans for future trips
The travel experience is a key part of the music
experience. For elementary and middle school students, one way to get ready
for the trip is to sell geraniums to your neighbors, friends and relatives
in the coming geranium sale.
Orchestra stuedents were able to defray over $2,500 pf
their trip cost because of the funds they built up in their orchestra
accounts. Each student maintains a portion of his or her sale in a special
account to help cover the costs of trips, music camps, or other special
events. Geranium sale information will be available soon! |
