                      Brownies

1 cup butter
4 oz. baking chocolate*
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1-1/3 cups flour
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease (not oil) and lightly flour bottom of a 9 x 13 pan.
In a large sauce pan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat**, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat; cool slightly.  Blend in sugar.  Beat in eggs, one at a time.  Sitr in remaining ingredients.  Spread in prepared pan.  Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until center is set.

Notes:
     * You can substitute
3/4 cup powdered baking cocoa and 1/4 cup butter for the 4 oz. baking chocolate.

     ** I usually mix the cocoa powder and sugar together in a heat proof bowl.  Next, I melt the butter
(1 cup + 1/4 cup) in a separate microwave proof bowl in the microwave.  When melted, I stir it into the cocoa powder and sugar mixture;  then proceed with the rest of the directions.
