Benjamin Shipera, violincello
“Modified Casals”; “A
Soloist of International Stature”; “A Passionate Performer”; “Robust Talent”;
These are merely a few of the praises used by the press to describe cellist
Benjamin Shapira. Winner of numerous competitions and awards, Shapira’s talent
was recognized at a very early age. He was chosen by Isaac Stern to join a
small, selected group of protégé young artists at the Jerusalem Music Center,
where he worked under the supervision of many celebrated artists, including
Isaac Stern, Janos Starker and others. He later continued his studies in the US
under the supervision of Aldo Parisot at Yale University and Zara Nelsova at
Rutgers University.
Shapira’s international career began following his celebrated Carnegie Hall
performance of the Complete Bach Suites for Cello Solo. He was immediately
invited to perform the Complete Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano at Lincoln
Center’s Alice Tully Hall and is in constant demand as a soloist ever since,
performing throughout the United States and abroad. His recent years US
performances include concerts in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston,
Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. His radio and television
performances include recordings for the National Public Radio, the Bavarian
National Radio, the BBC, Voice of America, the Israeli National Radio, the
Mexican National Radio, WNBC, WCBS among others.
Shapira has been extensively active as an educator. He served as music director
of the Staten Island Youth Symphony and the Dubuque Youth Symphony, and is in
demand as clinician with numerous youth groups around the US. Shapira joined the
faculty at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville as Director of Orchestral
Activities, conducting the university two symphony orchestras and coaching the
chamber music program.
