• When is 4K in session?
      • 4K follows the School District of Fort Atkinson's school calendar; however, 4K meets for approximately 3 hours/day Monday - Thursday on student contact days (EXCEPT the St. Joe's classroom which meets Monday - Friday).
    • What if I need childcare before and/or after 4K?
      • Childcare is at the expense of the family; however, not all sites offer childcare in addition to 4K. REGISTERING YOUR CHILD FOR 4K DOES NOT MEAN YOU REGISTERED YOUR CHILD FOR CHILDCARE - THAT IS A SEPARATE PROCESS.  REGISTERING YOUR CHILD FOR CHILDCARE DOES NOT MEAN YOU REGISTERED YOUR CHILD FOR 4K - THAT IS A SEPARATE PROCESS.
    • What if I can not afford to pay the $15.00 registration fee?
      • The School District of Fort Atkinson is able to accommodate individual needs such as paying in installments.  If you need to make arrangements please contact Rachel DePorter (4K Secretary) at 920.563.7817 or deporterr@fortschools.org OR Penny Bright (4K Coordinator) at 920.563.7844 or brightp@fortschools.org
    • After I complete all the steps to register my child for 4K, what happens next?
      • After registration is successfully completed and your child has been assigned to a 4K site, you will get more specific information (usually in August) from the director and or 4K teacher at your child's site.
    • What if I want a different site than what I requested OR a different site than where my child was placed?
      • The School District of Fort Atkinson works hard to honor all requests to the best of our ability.  You can request a change in placement by contacting Rachel DePorter (4K Secretary) at 920.563.7817 or deporterr@fortschools.org OR Penny Bright (4K Coordinator) at 920.563.7844 or brightp@fortschools.org
    • What if I can not attend the onsite registration?
      • The onsite registration day is important; however, the School District of Fort Atkinson understands that schedules may not accommodate attendance.  If you can not attend then please make arrangements with Carol Klein to drop off your completed forms, verify your child's birth certificate, and pay the $15.00 registration fee at Barrie Elementary School.
    • Can my 4K child ride the bus to school?
      • If a 4K child lives more than 2 miles away from his/her school OR lives outside city limits, then he/she is eligible for district provided transportation.  District transportation can be arranged for a fee to those who live within city limits.  If you are interested in arranging transportation to and/or from 4K please request that at the onsite registration.
    • Why do I seem to be filling out "the same" paperwork multiple times?
      • At the state level there are different mandates for public school paperwork and childcare center paperwork.  In order for both settings to be in compliance with Wisconsin regulations, paperwork can be redundant.
    • Is 4K "the new" 5K?
      • No!  Parents often ask, “How can I help my child be successful in school?” Children in Wisconsin are eligible for kindergarten based on their age and not on their skills. Most early childhood experts agree that children are best prepared to learn in school if they are provided frequent opportunities to play, talk, and experiment with peers in a nurturing and supportive environment. Like many Wisconsin public school districts, the School District of Fort Atkinson offers 4-year-old kindergarten so that our children are given the opportunity to interact in a variety of ways with peers before entering kindergarten.

    • What curriculum does the School District of Fort Atkinson's 4K classrooms use?
      • Each of the district 4K classrooms were originally set up using Creative Curriculum.  Currently, we use many of the Creative Curriculum philosophies; however, we also use Everyday Math for preschoolers and CLM (Comprehensive Literacy Model) for literacy as both of these approaches are used in our elementary schools.  The development of social and emotional skills is very important at this age level so we use a predominately play-based approach.
    • What if I do not reside in Fort Atkinson, but I would like my child to attend 4K in Fort Atkinson?
      • 4K students can open enroll to a school district in which he/she does not reside in.  For specific information on how to open enroll: Call Dr. Brown's office at 920-563-7807 or go to the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's website at http://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment for information on open enrollment.
