Introduced final assessment for the play. Students formed groups and chose prompts to write their scripts about. I gave background for writing a script.

  • 10/19 Collected journals for A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Went over classification of dramatic themes. Read archives article in relation to Leni R, when discussion propaganda themes. Gave students my list of top themes. Introduced Oedipus play with clip on connection to Freud. Read and discussed play up to page 17. Provided handout on divination with birds in connection to the play after viewing clip from the 13th Warrior using runes.

Viewed youtube of British using American accents and Americans using British accents to reinforce diction. Distributed handout on ampitheaters and their features/components. Went over conventions of Greek stage and manner of costuming.

  • 10/9 Conducted music experiment. Students listened to soundtracks to guess what type of action, mood or character the music went with. They then viewed actual films to gauge how well they guessed. This was meant to reinforce uses of theater music. We read pages on history and types of sound effects. Students viewed viedo on origin of Foley and watched an artist using Foley techniques to create sound effects.

  • 10/5 Completed a debrief of yesterday's performance to American Players Theater to see A Midsummer Night's Dream. Students received handout of journal options to review the live performance of the play with the filmed performance. Started discussion of music as an aspect of theater sound. Went over the ABCs of music. Students completed in-class activity on musical styles. Students should read interview with musical composer Hans Zimmer. Time given to work on journal responses for AMND.

Viewed youtube on top 100 movie lines to reinforce what makes dialog good.  Watched McKee youtube on 10 common flaws when creating dialog. Continued reading AMND. Completed Act 3 and scene 1 of Act 4.

  • 9/25 Went over pages in book on plot construction for the playwright.  Examined handout on 36 dramatic situations. Students should choose 10 and connect a movie that demonstates that plot structure. this homework due on Wednesday. We then watched an episode from Everybody Loves Raymond to allow students the opportunity to chart the episode's plot. Continued reading in Act 3 pgs 101-111.
